Andy Stansfield's guide to Sigma lenses - produced with the assistance of Sigma UK - provides a quick and easy reference point for any photographer considering Sigma's current range. Covering 46 lenses (with a couple of discontinued models of interest), this 240 page book has detailed reviews, MTF charts and examples with high-quality colour reproduction, along with some basic photography tips and technique.

From the perspective of the experienced photographer, you could be forgiven for wondering why this guide would be available - particularly with the wealth of information available on the internet. However, if you're new to photography or just prefer the feeling of paper and a good reference guide, then at £14.99, you get a readily available source of information for most Sigma lenses you're likely to come across.

The reviews are short yet concise, with comments on the sharpness and overall quality of the lenses alongside MTF charts and test images. Filling out what would be an otherwise relentless source of technical information, chapters and sections on technique provide a welcome introduction not only to Sigma-specific products, but the general whys and wherefores of different lens capabilities and characteristics - again, really making this a good title for the newcomer to SLR photography by addressing not only the changes in technique, the products that might be on your shopping list are featured too.

There is only one inevitable drawback to this printed title, and that is the march of progress. Despite being a new release, it omits several recently-launched lenses that are squarely targeting this market like the 17-70 OS and 70-300 OS; conversely, it's not quite comprehensive enough as a guide to past Sigma lenses you may hope to find in secondhand shops and dealers.
